  • 1983 - 2003 Director SRON Netherlands Institute For Space Research, Utrecht.
  • 1985 - 2007 Professor of Space Research, Utrecht University.
  • 2007 -         Professor Emeritus, Utrecht University.
  • Research:

    High Energy Astrophysics and development of Space Instruments:
    Involved in pioneering experiments in X-ray Astronomy on high altitude balloons and sounding rockets in the nineteen sixties and seventies. Leading role in EXOSAT (low energy X-ray telescopes), BeppoSAX (program scientist for the Netherlands), Chandra (Transmission Grating X-ray Spectrometer) and XMM Newton (ESA selected mission scientist). Co-initiator of the next generation of X-ray Observatories in Europe: XEUS(IXO), resulted eventually in selection of ATHENA as the ESA L2 mission.
    Publications: ~ 150 articles in refereed scientific journals,
    (Co)-editor of 2 review books: X-ray Spectroscopy in Astrophysics (Springer 1999),
    The Century of Space Science (2 volumes, Kluwer Academic Publishers 2001).
