Course description:
Throughout the electromagnetic spectrum, transient stellar
phenomena are observed in the sky: i.e. stellar objects that
are only visible for a short period of time. In most cases,
explosions of stellar dimensions are found to cause such
transient appearance. This course summarizes the
observational strategies to find transients and the results
obtained so far, and the underlying physics of the transient
phenomenon (as far as it is known). Due to their relevance to
many areas of astrophysics, special attention will be given to
the fields of Supernovae and Gamma-Ray Bursts. Further
topics will include Novae, Dwarf Novae, various types of
X-Ray Bursts.
